A tiger? In Africa?
I have been meaning to relay this story, and I almost forgot.
The first wife and I were at her sister’s this weekend for a family gathering of the sister’s husband’s side of the family. All the usual stuff food, fun, conversation — At one point I was sitting there listening to the conversation, and somebody said, “so and so had wrecked their car.” Someone else asked, “how?” and they replied, “hit a dear.” Then several people look stunned and, one after the other said, “A dear? In Carlton?” Now the town name may not be right, but what was so amazing is that it was almost verbatim Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life — A tiger? In Africa? Only with a dear and they weren’t trying to be funny. I nearly lost … Read More »
Kitchen Floor
Anita has wanted a new kitchen floor for a while now, and Harry decided to take on the project this summer. They decided to lay a wide plank pine floor. The material arrived in late June, and it required a few weeks to acclimate. Harry started laying the floor two weekends ago; he did the necessary demolition a few weeks ago. Kenny (Anita’s cousin) and Pat (his wife) came up the first day the project got started. Kenny and I helped Harry with the work that day. Harry worked on his own throughout the week and on Saturday. I helped again this past Sunday; I was the designated nailer. I have been paying the price for the past couple of days, my legs are so sore I can barely walk.

Jesus was Jewish
I must say I am under-whelmed with the responses to the Jesus question. Thanks David, for being the one person who answered it. I was hoping with the large percentage of this blog’s readership being Catholic, that it would have drawn more responses.
I had only put the question out there because I was reading somewhere how the resurrection is the whole foundation for Christianity and if it were disproved that particular religious movement would cease to be. I did find it interesting that even though it is a central tenant, that believers do not agree upon whether it was a physical actual (videotapable event) or something less tangible.
I was not aware of this, and was curious how important y’all believed the event to be to your faith. Anyway, so much for the interesting discussion.
Rain, rain go away
I like rain; I especially like those ferocious thunder storms that Alabama has in spring and summer. However, I am really started to get annoyed with rain. It seems like it has been raining non-stop since May here. I wouldn’t mind a few times a week even; the main problem is that it is really cutting into my ability to get any sort of consistent riding in on the bicycle. Chalk this up to Murphy, but the three day I was in Evansville last week, it was nice and sunny here in New York. This week has been nothing but rain again, and that is all that is in the forecast too. On top of that the temperature is having trouble making it into the sixties (burrrrgh) — I don’t think I need … Read More »
Lyle Lovett
Ali and I went to see Lyle Lovett this weekend. He played the Belleayre music festival. He is kind of a big act for them (I think). The setup isn’t the greatest, they have a tent and sell seats under it, and there are general admission lawn seats. However the setup only allows people of the lawn to see the legs of the performers. In spite of that we still had a good time.
I still can’t believe how cold it gets at night. We wore long pants, tee shirt, flannel, fleece jackets, gloves, and used a blanket — with all of that I still wasn’t warm, but I was comfortable. It is the middle of July people; you should be able to go out in a tee-shirt and shorts.
I keep forgetting to post … Read More »
A Hoax
I’m curious, if you learned tomorrow that the Jesus resurrection story was a hoax, how would that impact your religious beliefs?
Alabama et. al.
Ali and I started our vacation last Friday. We flew into Atlanta and spent the night with Gabe. It was nice to see them again — For the last couple of years I have been going to Atlanta for Super Comm and staying with them. This year Super Comm was being held and Chicago so I didn’t think I would see them this year. I’m glad it worked out that we got to see them after all; even if it was only for a short while. The next morning we met Jeromy and Mandy at Six Flags and had a lot of fun doing all the things you do at a place like that. We went to Matas for lunch on Monday, and then up to Cheeha to fly kites.
On Tuesday I drove my … Read More »
Society’s running late
I’ve been noticing this for a while, but hadn’t really put a label on it. I can’t say for sure when it started, but I think it was in the past ten years. Society has gotten progressively later. My mother, like David was always running late, so I always made it a point to be on time for things. I find it annoying when people are late.
I’ve started noticing a general trend in that nothing ever starts on time. Of course there is the obligatory Doctor visit; they are always going to be late. But take movies for instance, they used to start precisely at the listing time. Now you are lucky if the previews start at the listing time. When we went to the concert last week same thing; it was supposed to start at 8pm, but didn’t get … Read More »
Simon & Garfunkel
The concert was great as expected. We were 10 rows from the stage! The concert opens with America playing (a recording) and they have a large screen where they play images from their childhood through growing up and then on to some political events the walk on Selma, Iran Contra, and so on. When this finishes the lights come up and Simon and Garfunkel are on stage. Simon started by dedicated the concert to Ray Charles who passed away that day. They then launched into Old Friends / Bookends theme, just the two of them. When that finished the whole band came on stage and they launched into A Hazy Shade of Winter. (The whole set list is included at the bottom of the entry).
They have some scripted banter about getting back together and breaking up, and how this is … Read More »
It’s happening again
Ali found out last week that Simon & Garfunkel are playing at the Pepsi Arena in Albany tomorrow night (6/10). We were able to get row 11 floor tickets. I can’t wait! We saw them back in December; all I can say is WOW.
If any of you get the chance it is very much worth it.
