Wood Stove
We mostly finished our wood stove project a few weeks ago (with the minor exception of some trim work). It was my first time doing a tiling job. For that matter it is my first time working with metal studs, building a hearth, etc. Overall, I am pleased with how it came out. Of course, there are a few things I wish I had done better, but that’s always the way when you’re cutting teeth on something new.
Harry and I spent a weekend doing the rough construction. The hearth and half wall are completely non-combustible; built out of metal studs and durock (a cement board product). For the half wall, Harry welded a metal post to ensure the corner of the wall would be sturdy. The tall narrow wall is built on top … Read More »

Potato Chip
This summer I’ve been doing a ride that takes me out East Brook (towards rolling country side) to Feak Hollow. Feak Hollow is a decent 25-30 minute climb depending on how you are riding. Once at the top of Feak Hollow, you head down a hill and then take a right on Covert Hollow, which brings you to Rt. 10; another right and you’re headed back into Walton. This is about a 22 mile ride and usually takes me 1:40:00 to 1:50:00.
Yesterday, I embarked on this ride, and was pushing really hard. The first check point (Feak Hollow) usually takes me 24 minutes to reach; I did it in 20 minutes. I then started climbing Feak Hollow. This usually takes me 25-30 minutes; on this ride I did it in 17 minutes. … Read More »
Grandma O
Over the weekend we had a birthday party for Grandma O (Ali’s Grandmother on her father’s side), she turned 90. A lot of the Olson’s came to celebrate. We mostly lounged around Harry and Anita’s eating and drinking, and occasionally playing games with the kids.

Slip Slidin’ Away
I’ve recently built a home recording studio consisting of
A mostly quiet PC (the fans could still use some tweaking)
Firepod — A Firewire audio input device
Adobe Auditions — A 128 track audio editing software package
For my first outing with it, I decided to record Paul Simon’s Slip Slidin’ Away.
Feel free to give it a listen.
Granby
On April 9th Ali and I returned to New York from our Alabama trip with Grandma in tow. I had been trying to talk her in to coming and visiting us in New York for a long time. Now I don’t want you to get the wrong impression my Grandma loves me, it’s just that she is really scared of flying, and thus the reason she had been reluctant to visit. I’m not sure what changed, but she decided she’d give it a try as long as she didn’t have to do it by herself. Accordingly, Ali and I hatched a plan to bring her to New York with us when we returned from our Alabama trip.
She stayed with us for four weeks, and I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to have … Read More »

I stumbled across this on Joe’s site while catching up on his blog. It seems to have done a decent job of analyzing me.

Fear & Loathing in Alabama
It’s not that I fear or loathe anything in Alabam, it is just that the picture reminded me of The Great Gonzo. Now I don’t mean to tread on the memory of Hunter Thompson, it’s just that the “granny” glasses reminded me of the poster for the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
We had a great time in Alabama visiting everyone! Enjoy the pictures.
